Given the shortness of time left, if the fee (and payoff) is unlikely to be very much, it's best for all parties to settle up the contract. We potentially get a discount off the full wage bill (given they're going pretty much straight into a new job), the new club doesn't have to pay a fee or rush to make the signing, the player is able to look around and is likely to get a signing on fee as a free agent.
Far better than the risk of being stuck with a player we can't use (due to squad size limits) and they kicking their heels with the U23s at best. |  |

It allows other clubs to be able to have a better position to negotiate wages rather than having to consider the current wage they are on.
If I remember my way around football contracts (and it's been quite a few years since I looked at the regulations) , if a player does not request a transfer then the old club can be made liable to make up any shortfall in wages between new club contract and existing, in addition player will be eligible for any future loyalty payments, as they have not requested a move.
I would expect most of the squad would have had fixed raises built into the contracts based on promotion, so potentially will be on significantly (in a relative sense) higher salaries than they would have been 12-18 months ago.
By settling a contract with a negotiated price and releasing a player - it often works out in the best interest for all parties. |  | | |
