Protest songs 17:19 - Oct 4 with 4197 viewsgtsb1966

As the middle east blows up again it made me think of all the things that have happened in the world in which a protest song has been written . Could be anything, past and present, and this is my favourite. Yours...

Whilst performed in kindergartens and seen as patriotic, this song included a couple of subversive verses but the second one set out below was never recorded. These verses aren't sung in kindergarten..

There was a big high wall there that tried to stop me.
The sign was painted, said: 'Private Property.'
But on the backside, it didn't say nothing.
This land was made for you and me.

One bright sunny morning in the shadow of the steeple,
By the relief office I saw my people;
As they stood there hungry,
I stood there wondering if God blessed America for me?

Quite a specific thing to protest about, but has a wider message I guess:

My favourite hip hop song which I discovered from an NME tape.

Sadly it doesn't seem well known, especially given its powerful message, as it only has 2,000 views on YouTube.

EDIT: according to this it is considered the first political hip hop song. Indeed, it was released in 1980 two years before The Message.

With lyrics that are very apt for our times.

Have you heard it on the news?
About this fascist groove thang
Evil men with racist views
Spreading all across the land

Don't just sit there on your ass
Unlock that funky chain dance
Brothers, sisters, shoot your best
We don't need this fascist groove thang
