Hardly surprising, but still difficult to adjust to after 2 brilliant seasons. Everton were good. Not hoofball, but different from a lot of other teams. No attacking fullbacks but plenty of skill. Really tough, and their set up meant we never got any what I believe are termed “overloads”. I think we’ll do better against teams that are willing to go toe-to-toe, like Villa. They just had better players in key positions. Doucore, DCL and Ndiaye especially. Fantastic bit of skill turning Burns inside out. The basic Town attacking patterns are there still, so we do get the ball forward at least. But we seem to be tinkering all the time in an effort to find some combination that works, which means we then lack a bit of cohesion. Was a bit odd ending up with our L1 back 4. Cam and Woolfie did OK while Clark made a bit of a difference. We’ve spent a lot, but really that’s just to give us the depth we need. We’re starting so far behind everyone else. Bit annoying to hear the return of a couple of NS moaners, and the negative stuff I listened to after the match in Beattie’s was quite something. Would have been different if Clark had scored or the penalty stood, but pretty comfortable for Everton. Everton fans make more noise than Liverpool. Need a win, obviously, and to hit on some formula that just works. | |
