Creativity in society 13:07 - Nov 4 with 915 viewsReus30

Afternoon all,
Just been reading a fair few science books, bit on AI and technology - all the beautiful boring stuff. But a question that keeps popping up is where is creativity in our society?

I mean take football. It's all just a system game now. The days of gazza and ronaldinho and these incredible individual talents etc are dead. The best way to succeed is to have the best system.

In society, we are being imposed with more and more rules, guidelines and expectation. We are reliant on technology to do the thinking for us so essentially we are all zombies processing our way to death.

Where have all the great thinkers gone? Where is the next wave of geniuses going to come from? I don't see anything like that, it's all influencer bs or negative news stories about how the world is falling apart but there really is a lack of gifted people these days. I don't know, maybe I am going mad. Thought I would raise a different point rather than continue to be annoyed by football.

The problem nowadays is everyone’s doing podcasts. Or blogs and vlogs. 99% of which is rubbish “look at me” content. Nobody’s making art. Everyone’s making s5it.

Plus our education doesn't encourage free thinking. We just coach young people on how to pass exams. Then they'll go to college/university and just do enough independent learning to pass a degree then out into the world of work to be told what to do/think by their employer.

Not sure football has ever been much of a yardstick for societal creativity has it? Would've thought the arts is a better barometer? Certainly football has changed a lot though, more I think because the industry at the top of the tree has evolved so much and with so much money invested in it, its become much more about data & insight and fine margins, with raw pace and athleticism very much a necessity, more so than it was in the 90's for example. Rugby is similar, it's much rarer to see the fat kid as a prop, the backs are generally absolute units now.

It's easy to tar all 'influencers' with the same brush but I would say some are quite creative though, and social media helps to get a break, take comedy as an example. The barriers to entry are lower and that can only be a good thing. 50 years ago you probably had to know the right people to get some work at Butlins, work the circuit for years and then the same handful like Jim Davidson would be untouchable and mop up the TV work. Now you can reach an audience with the click of a button and the market dictates what's worth sharing, that must breed more creativity.

Not sure about the great thinkers, probably in Silicon valley making loads of money (alongside some weird egotists).

Well whether you agree with them or not the likes of Peter Singer, Cornel West and Slavoj Zizek I would say are great thinkers of our age and doubtless there are many more.

“Helping is not, as conventionally thought, a charitable act that is praiseworthy to do but not wrong to omit. It is something that everyone ought to do.” Singer

“The true ethical test is not only the readiness to save the victims, but also - even more, perhaps - the ruthless dedication to annihilating those who made them victims.” Zizek

“The political triumph of Donald Trump is a symbol and symptom—not cause or origin—of our imperial meltdown. Trump is neither alien nor extraneous to American culture and history. In fact, he is as American as apple pie. Yet he is a sign of our spiritual bankruptcy—all spectacle and no substance, all narcissism and no empathy, all appetite and greed and no wisdom and maturity.” West

Not a question that I could answer even if I felt myself qualified, which of course I don't.

The question also implies that there is a philosopher/thinker after whom all others are as nothing and I don't believe that can ever be the case.
