Indeed, the BBC article does not give the full backstory and there is something so obviously wrong when a mother regards her child as not part of the family with partner and other children. I can only surmise that there was something the mother was unable to come to terms with concerning either the parentage or the deformity, and had lost all trace of emotion towards the baby as a result (but not to the extent of disposing of it, however her future plans were either inchoate or finding a means of disposal when the inevitable happened.)
