True, but it felt like we were making progress on recognising when to go a bit more direct. Today he’s just got nothing to aim at and the ball comes straight back at us if we go long.

More than the difference being one player, I think the biggest difference between today and how we’ve played in other games this season is the complete lack of any focal point at the top of the pitch. We’ve not been able to hold the ball up and pin them back, which in turn has left no space for the 3 behind the front man to work in. Tonali has also been annoyingly good which has compounded things.
We’ve been poor defensively and too easy to cut open when they attack at pace, but that’s been the case in a lot of games this season so wouldn’t pick that out as being massively different today as compared to previous fixtures. | |
