So almost at the half way stage 16:47 - Dec 22 with 3764 viewsAsa

And we are level with or a win behind Palace , Leicester and Wolves who’ve had about a £900m head start on us, Everton who’ve had about a £1.5b head start on us.

We’ve done it all with a squad that largely was playing in League One 18 months ago, we’ve had the second worst injuries in the league, they’ve been to the key positions we don’t have cover for and we’ve held our own against some very good sides for the large part playing some decent stuff.

I’d have absolutely taken that in any world where realism exists and we’ve been pretty unlucky to not have taken more from the performances.

We were always going to have off days and on those off days we were going to get a good bloody hammering. We lost to the same scoreline that the mighty Man City lost to Spurs by.

I actually still think we’ll just about stay up. Never write this manager, the group or this club off. But I’d have absolutely taken going into Christmas a win or so from safety!

I admire your optimism about us actually staying up. Never write this manager, the group or this club off is something we’ve come to believe.

The reality for me is we are finding it marginally less difficult than my worst concern!, ie we are not currently losing every week and not by many when we do. However we are on paper within touching distance of safety which for now means the players will be hell bent on taking points where they can.

My concern is as the season is passing we are taking injuries in key areas, we are then finding it more difficult to secure points against teams in the top half (3 points) and we’ve not done enough against teams in lower half (9) to be confident of our rise in the PL.

I take the point that being in touching distance at the half way stage we would have taken, but our task in the second half is monumental, fewer games to achieve our aims, and teams are in their stride.

I’m taking a solace from the fact that we accumulated double points in the second 10 games compared with the first 9 but will now do well to many points at all from our first next 6, if we find a way to stay in this battle then Soton at home on 01 Feb will be massive. Task is to keep it relevant until then. I do think we can be a second half season team but that requires Jan to not be a write off both for new signings making contributions and points.

I think the issue is a lot of people have misjudged the step up.

Sheffield United were a joke last year. 0-8 home defeat, 0-6 home defeat, 0-5 home defeat, 1-5 home defeat. Just awful. Now flying at the top of the Championship. Really does show the gap.

I thought we'd be around 14th or 15th and stay up by about 6-9 points. The reality is with a little bit more luck with injuries or decisions we could easily be 4-5 points better off currently and sitting just below that.

My fear was we'd be humiliated. We are doing as well as some fairly established teams we'd have hoped to be performing as well as / slightly better than. We are a few fine margins off everyone being very, very happy.

As it stands it looks like it'll be very tough but I think we'll do it because of how we've been able to perform when players are fit and the fact I can see us recruiting well again in January. Feels more 50/50 to me on relegation that a foregone conclusion some would have you believe.
