Thoughts on the double pivot? 18:26 - Feb 3 with 1067 viewsjasondozzell

It's served us so well, from the Evans Morsy days through to Mass n Mors and Cajuste in there too.
It's something that is integral to the way KM plays but has it become a problem? We've been able to use it to create pressure in there and push up the pitch for so long but sometimes it feels like we now get caught between that control we used to have and the defensive side so that we end up with neither almost. Cajuste seems to be able to get us up the pitch and break the press and Morsy is still bloody brilliant but do we need a third body in there?

Legs and drive and control. It's why Downes would be a brilliant target to be honest.

Some of this is just the consequence of seeing less of the ball and being under pressure from world class sides but it feels like we've lost a little of that control in there that we've had for so long.

No data but on the eye we’ve certainly lost control at critical times but still goals in games that have been closer are moments not always a relentless presssure on the goal. We’ve definitely relied less on high possession as we’ve gone through two leagues but we’ve not seen the goal output expected for a team looking to rely on counter pressure deep in our half and transition goals. I think we’ve gone backwards in this regard as the season has gone on but that could be wrapped up in a very difficult 6-7 game run from Newcastle.

Yeah I agree. I think part of it was the move to the back 5 and low block which we needed to do but perhaps went too far with.

Moments is a good way to describe the goals we've conceded. We've rarely been overrun.

It just feels we have no control that the pivot usually gives so we are unable to lock teams in and launchv repeated attacks.

Trouble is, you put a third body in there and something else has to give in the pitch leading to an overload. So that means we can’t press or can’t defend. Obviously ee wouldn’t sacrifice a defender, so that means we probably become even more toothless.

I think our setup is fine. What’s letting us down is a lack of individual and collective quality in the final third.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

No, what's letting us down is a lack of dynamism *within* said pivot. Neither player is capable of going box-to-box and reducing the gap between Delap and supporting the central 10. Morsy and Cajuste both look rather jaded, but if Phillips can't cut it we're just going to have to suck it up.

Disagree. Cajuste had a terrific game on Saturday. He definitely went box to box. From being last man to put tackle in our box to running almost full length of pitch with the ball to being on edge of box for a shot. Morsy is the trouble in there. He might as well have not been on the pitch first half, he was just bypassed.
