Toughest second tier? 18:58 - Feb 7 with 1307 views | Zx1988 | Everyone talks about the Championship being one of the toughest leagues out there, but I'd like to chuck the 2. Bundesliga into the mix. It seems to have become the graveyard of German football, with some big names down there (and some still there) in recent years: HSV, Schalke, Hertha BSC, Werder Bremen, and 1. FC Köln to name but a few. Then you've got the seasoned yo-yo teams such as Bochum, Fürth et al, and, combined with the third-place playoff against 16th in the Bundesliga, it's one hell of a league to try and get out of. Just ask HSV.

I'm not sure that is necessarily the right yardstick, when a lot of those title wins were pre-WW2. Likewise, it never seems to be too hard for the recently-relegated sides.

Parachute payments give you a huge advantage. Even Norwich who haven't had them this season are able to spend nearly 10m in this last window.

That's true. I suppose what makes them hard is very different in each case. For the Championship, it's incredibly hard to challenge the top order, and the teams with parachute payments have a distinct advantage. In the 2. Bundesliga, it seems to be a more egalitarian league, and it's very hard for recently-relegated sides to impose themselves on the division. The Championship is so hard that it's incredibly predictable, whereas the unpredictability of the 2. Bundesliga is what makes it hard to escape.
