It’s just not that much fun for a newly promoted side, this season has not been enjoyable if I look back as a whole.

Some highlights without doubt but the gulf in ability and squads is just astonishing.

I don’t think there is any one thing we have not done right in isolation, we could have done recruitment better, could have done selection better and players could have played better but it’s not a blame game on anyone, the simple truth is the gulf between established PL sides and promoted sides seems to be almost insurmountable this season.

I’ll reserve judgement on whether the last 2 seasons have been anomalies and the promoted sides have just been poor, but if next season goes the same way I think the days of promoted sides being competitive have gone.

Hopefully the team will prove me wrong and we will go on a 5 game winning run, but even if we were to stay up, not sure I can face another season of scrabbling for scraps at the bottom of the division.

It's a tough gig.

We've given it a go and there has been some delightful performances just without rewards.

There are some really niggling player choices that will make me always wonder what if in future years.

What if we played hirst instead of delap
What if we played townsend instead of davis
What if we played broadhead instead of...
What if we signed Palmer in the summer
What if we used oshea more as the rb with wolfy as our regular cb
What if we continued to use Burgess over greaves
What if we signed sarmiento instead of clarke
What if we signed moore as a back up
What if we tried a 3 man midfield
What if we tried a hirst delap combo
What if we tried j clarke on the right.
What lead to so many muscle injuries. Could we have Done better?

a niche perspective

Honestly I don’t think those are big enough factors to make the difference. I have wondered (and this is not a criticism of KM) whether a more experienced manager may have done more with the team, and that the impact of having players learning as well as the manager learning has been massively underestimated. I don’t think this season has damaged KMs reputation hugely but I think that PL teams may be put off looking at him in the summer.

I don’t think we have been good enough defensively for the last 2 years, we could score our way out of trouble last year but that was never going to happen this year. The injuries to Axel, O’Shea and Greaves have impacted hugely.

The other challenge is that the PSR rules now actually seem to work against promoted teams.

I sadly think the PL is now a closed shop.
