A new team 00:49 - Feb 27 with 868 viewsSaffronWaldenBlues

Having thought about it, aside from the recruitment issues I think a key factor in our failure to reallly get off the ground has been try to bed a new team in between two windows in the top flight and get them playing the way we would like, sure there's time on the training pitch but that's not going to be anything like the brutality of this league. You simply don't have the time to bed new players in or for players to make a few mistakes. Even "poor sides" will score from our basic errors in this league and we make far too many of them per game to really be competitive, even if we do play okay in spells.

I think our failing was maybe trying to bring in too many, too soon. Muric, Greaves, O'Shea, Cajuste, Phillips, Delap, Johnson, Szmodics, Ogbene, Townsend, and Clarke in window one and then Enciso, Philogene, Godfrey and Palmer in window two - 16 players - we were probably overly ambitious if what we could realistically achieve with these guys in the sort of time we have had to get it right.

A lot of those players will be here next season. Getting them in when we did has ensured that, it would've been harder to secure them in the summer coming. I'm hoping that formed part of the strategy because in the short term, it has flatlined let's be honest and we didn't really target the right areas, albeit we have had to sign players to cover injuries and cover those that haven't really worked (Muric, Clarke)

There's enough attacking quality there, knowing a striker will be needed. Midfield will need a complete re-boot. I'm not convinced Taylor is a top half Championship starter, never mind Prem. Humphreys still needs development time somewhere too. Defence we have options but struggling to find the best combo.

Thing is, is the man who got these players in going to be here? There is an element of being victims of our own success here but that is brutal reality of the Prem, we had to act but also within the limits of what we could spend and who we could attract.

I'm hoping we can go back to enjoying football again next season. We weren't really ready for this and it has been a hard watch. But we will come again.

Forest signed over 25 players when they got promoted, costing over £150m, which saw them docked pts under PSR rules last season but I suggest the gamble for them paid off. Luton hardly signed any last season and look at them.

It’s not just about the number of players, it’s about soooooo much more.
