.....it and they all became so relentlessly miserable looking. Of hundreds of people I observed on a trip to the shops this evening I think I saw one smile....she was looking at her phone!
Where has the joy gone? Maybe it's just me!

In Hertfordshire it's noticeable how towns vary. In one or two towns virtually everyone looks miserable and does everything possible not to catch anyone else's eye. It has nothing to do with how wealthy the town is. Harpenden town centre is miserable; however in the big park there some folk actually speak.
My wife's cousin from Chingford is always amazed how many folk speak and smile when she visits St Albans. Many smiles and hi's from folk of Afro-Caribbean family origin among others.
I tend to think there is also a North/South element in the sense that the further north you go, the friendlier people are.
For example, I spent time visiting my mother-in-law in hospital in Liverpool last year and got into all sorts of friendly interactions with people, something that just did not happen when my mother was in hospital in Kent.
As further evidence, I came across a blind person on his own at the crowded station at the Bristol Rovers game. As everyone else was avoiding him, I asked him if he needed help, and walked him to the ground as it turned out he was a Bristol Rovers fan. I mentioned to him that people were probably reluctant to help him but he said he had recently moved to Newcastle where the contrast couldn't be greater with people going out of their way to help.
Of course there are exceptions in the south as you suggest, and In West Kent places like Dartford and Gravesend are in marked contrast to the po-faced area where I live. I put it down to these being traditionally working class areas where a sense of community still exists.

I've been known to just walk away from someone who was constantly looking at their phone. Not sure if they've noticed yet!
One thing I find very strange is to see a group of workmen at their lunch break all on their phones and not interacting in the way that they would have done at one time.

The daily grind of modern big town life takes it's toll. But having said that, I don't think it's entirely to do with socio-economic conditions. For most demographics quality of life is still better than at most periods in history. There are 'first world' problems causing the malaise. Generations born since 1995 are increasingly comfortable with online life but at the expense of in-person social skills.

Now that is brilliant, and requires several watches to see all of the points being made.
For me that animation illustrates the way of 'life' we have slipped into far better than any words, written or spoken, ever can.
Absolutely brilliant, put it on the syllabus.
The automaton-like provision of streams of emojis by dead-eyed people was one bit that particularly struck home for me, together with the lemmings at the end.
