I know I am in a minority 09:43 - Mar 14 with 560 views | SaffronWaldenBlues | But I was really hoping to see Delap in the England squad, it would have been great for the club to have had an England player again after two decades, especially given the fact we have not had a lot to shout about this season. I still think having an England player is a big deal for Ipswich and would have added some shine to the season, at least. One frustration for me is it continues what the media say every time we have a prospect, at least since the 1990s, that to play for England you have to leave Ipswich. It was certainly stated to tedium with Dozzell before he left for Spurs, and of course, Dyer and Wright a few years later.

I don't think it is stated that to play for England they have to leave Ipswich, more to the point that those players you reference at the time were still young and inexperienced, and the move to Div1 / PL enabled their call-ups by being able to play at the higher profile competitions. Wright played for England while still at Town (I think) following promotion through the play-offs . . . Ipswich the club has never been a barrier to an England cap, but our league standing and therefore the type of player/relevant experience at the time has certainly been.
