New details on the US deal for Ukraine - really bad 08:44 - Mar 28 with 1244 viewsgiant_stow

...really quite terrifying in terms of implications actually, especially the bit about a US/Russia deal on restarting oil through the various pipelines.

'Paywall remover' available.

"There is talk about Nord Stream. It would be interesting if the Americans put pressure on Europe, to make them stop refusing our Russian gas,” said Sergei Lavrov, Russia’s foreign minister."

It is simply extortion what that ‘deal’ implies! There is no way even if he wanted to Zelenskyy would get that through his parliament.
A Ukrainian journalist asked this simple question the other day, when the PDA aid stops coming and trump doesn’t renew it what hold will the Americans have over Ukraine and why should they have any say in what happens after that?
82% of Ukrainians said they are in favour of fighting on when the US aid stops!

Yeah extortion's the word. Or as the article say, a return to 19th century rules, except this time, Europe on the receiving end.

Re your stat, I take my hat off to the Ukrainians for being so ballsy.

I wonder what the world will look like in 2 years?

Can't help think that emergency rearmament is starting to look essential and not just the bump up in spending already announced.

I find it incredible that the 200 Billion Euros of frozen Russian assets held by the E.U will have to be released back to Russia in July as a renewal of the freeze is being blocked by Hungary and Slovakia. It might be democratic, but it shows a fundamental political weakness of the E.U to the fore. It is so diverse and cannot be united on everything, yet a single nation can block the wishes of the majority. So much is working to Russia's advantage at the moment. If I was part of the E.U leadership, (God forbid) I would have liquidated or hidden what I could pretty damn quick.

Rearmament has been priority for 11 years, yet heads were and still are buried in the sand. The army is still shrinking, assets off to the scrap yards, tiny air force, no transport and I wouldn’t put it past the govt to flog off the carriers for a couple of quid, promise to spend the money on defence and make it disappear elsewhere. Putin is laughing at the U.K. and Trump will from extort it. Why wouldn’t he?

Spain wants to use defence money on immigration, U.K. defence systems are not to be bought even if they’re the best because we are not in the EU and basically Europe unity despite sharp suits, big flags and intentions is splintering.

Trump and Putin view countries with no power or size as under different rules. Ripe for robbing and capturing then completely ransacking. Might is right. US demands on Ukraine are so awful you’d see it as a bad joke, if it wasn’t true and this is ample proof of what the future holds for Europe since it can’t and won’t defend itself.

The first step towards protecting itself is accepting there is a need to and ending denial and hope that it’ll all go away. Sadly, Starmer and the others are not even in the ‘acceptance’ phase of change at the moment and it’s probably too late.

So what’s it to be? Vassal 52 state to the US or being looked after by that nice Mr Putin? How about bending the knee to China? They’re not a bad lot if you ignore one or two little things like human rights and Covid creation. The best bit is that as a vassal we won’t have to think any more and if we wanted to we wouldn’t be allowed to anyway.

The Ukrainians? Amazing people. They deserved support, not vilification. Under the new world order, they’ve received the latter.

For what its worth, I think there was a difference of opinion in the west over the wisdom of snaffling those Russian billions currently tied up. The fear is that it would set a precedent for similar actions around the world and that the rule of law / assets would be in peril. Not sure which side is winning, but so the argument goes...
