I prefer the chorus to "January, February" originally by Page and Dickson, but the 1997 version sung beautifully in the style of A Cappella by Thelma Barlow and Nigel Havers.
Ladysmith Black Mambazo, their best known work in the UK being their contributions on Paul Simon's Graceland album, eg Homeless.
The Blind Boys of Alabama also come to mind.
Or if you want 4 indie kids from Hull (well, kinda) how about The Housemartins' Caravan of Love?
Or, for something completely different, how about the Postmodern Jukebox version of Wannabe, in the style of The Andrew's Sisters?
Love PMJ. They have done covers of songs I have never heard of that have made me seek out the originals. Those originals more times than not have been more than disappointing. This one is the one that springs to mind. This woman is just blues sass, she's just fantastic.
Bill Bailey isn't a fan. 3rd worse song of all time.
Thanks for posting this. I've always felt very similar about Africa (and consider it one of the most overrated songs of all time) but tend not to voice my opinion too much as it seems so universally loved... I'm also well aware that I like plenty of music that many would consider total rubbish. Each to their own, hey.
