Wide areas 11:57 - Apr 22 with 785 views | IPSWICHFANITFC | The threat this season from opposition wide men and the number of chances created from wide areas has probably been the biggest eye opener of the PL for me this season. It sometimes feels like we concede the same goal every week (cut back in the box) but that has been our bread and butter under McKenna in L1 & the Championship, so we know how good the passage of play is. I thought Arsenal were brilliant at shifting the ball to create a lot of winger vs full back opportunities on Sunday. I thought Spurs (in particular Son) were another team who were very good at it at Portman Road too. Bournemouth were brilliant down their left at Portman Road. The quality we have faced has been unplayable at times. We haven't had the quality to match that type of play at this level and cause a threat in wide areas. The players we had already and brought in haven't been good enough to step up to this level. It's a hard area to address as it's an expensive position to recruit with quality, but the gap in quality in the wide areas between the PL & Championship is massive.

You have given good examples of how our opponents have made good use of the extra space available at Portman Road.

Possibly. I thought Bournemouth were very good at making the pitch as big as possible at Portman Road and holding width well. It's more the patterns of play we've come up against this season. The build up is controlled and patient, with the ball transferred from side to side. I feel like we try and build up more centrally, whereas a lot of teams in the PL use the width more.

We used that extra width in Championship & League but it has worked against us this season. The only dimensions for Portman Road I can find shows a pitch width of 75m, although I thought is was 72m. That is a lot of extra space to explore.

I believe one of the first things that McKenna did when he came in was widen the pitch, wasn't it?

The pitch has always been quite wide but I wasn't sure if the new pitch was narrowed for PL regulations etc They generally want more spaces down the touchline for advertising etc
