The peerless Quadrophenia features two incredible instrumental pieces. The eponymous Quadrophenia and The Rock. Both explore the four main themes of the album and pretty much bookend the entire piece. They playing is of course immaculate.
It is such a regret to me that the original members couldn't quite pull off the piece on stage, with the multi layered tracks proving just too complex to play on stage as a four piece. The fact they tried is to be applauded. A lot of it worked but as the 73 tour moved into 74, more and more tracks were jetisoned.
It wasn't until 96 that the piece was played in it's entirety by a cast of celebs and other musicians finally bringing it to life.
