The chancellor, Rachel Reeves, is considering overruling the supreme court over a £44bn car loan commission scandal after lobbying by some of the UK’s biggest lenders, the Guardian can reveal.

Under Treasury contingency plans being discussed for the event that justices decide to uphold the entirety of last October’s shock appeal court ruling that customers may be entitled to billions in compensation, the government would retrospectively change the law to cut liabilities for lenders.

Overturning court decisions is a very dodgy road to go down, hopefully it’s just tabloid talk but this government are proving very difficult to like.

Think the Supreme Court ruling came as a surprise. Haven’t loan companies always paid commissions to Motor traders?

The concern might be that this opens the flood gates for class actions involving loans in other areas, double glazing for example.

Worth noting that this is referring to the part of the case that is being debated about 99% of car finance loans being unlawful.

If the supreme court held up this part of the decision it would be a disaster and she probably would need to intervene, but it is widely expected the Supreme Court will overturn the original decision and that it will return to the original case - which is much smaller scale, and in my opinion, would be correct to pay back to consumers because lenders definitely abused the powers they had etc.
