Anybody on here based in Bangkok or anywhere else in Thailand? 14:03 - Sep 8 with 3862 viewsurbanblue

Heading there on Friday. It's actually a planned trip that has gone pear-shaped in that I was going to go with a mate to Hua Hin to hang out and play Golf. He's now had to pull out so I'm going on my own.

Intended to just go for a wander somewhere on my own channelling my old backpacking days, but have now discovered that it's monsoon season and it's going to be pretty wet in most areas. There has been flooding in some parts. Wanted to have a look at Chiang Mai but seems the North gets the rain worst of all. So guess I'm just going to make it up as I go along after Bangkok ...

Also hoping the game will be on somewhere even though it will be a 2am kick off locally. At least it's a city where a lot of bars will be open.

Any ideas?

Various parts of Pattaya flood when it rains heavily but the flooded roads soon clear once it stops raining and motorbike taxis and baht buses still run. It's rainy season but don't let that put you off, there are still long dry periods.

Jomtiem is quite nice, I stayed there for a couple of months when I first arrived here. Nice beach, loads of bars and restaurants, the night market, floating market, big parks and the elephant sanctuary nearby. The infamous Walking Street and city centre is only a 10-15 minute motorbike ride away. However, the area has been overrun with Russians in recent years, though that's not necessarily an issue because they generally stick to their own groups and there's very little hassle anywhere other than the occasional drunken Brit humiliating himself lol.

If you do come to Pattaya I recommend Wongamat Beach area in Naklua (North Pattaya). Lots of nice hotels, great beach (much cleaner than Pattaya beach!) loads of 'normal' bars, restaurants, shops and massage shops. Can walk the whole area. Terminal 21 shopping mall is nearby, Central Festival shopping mall and the seedier parts of Pattaya are again just 10-15 minutes away. And there are some good tourists sites fairly nearby such as the Sanctuary of Truth and the Millions Years Stone Park (check them out on Google).

The Sanctuary of Truth is well worth the short trip from Pattaya.

Poll: Should horse racing be banned in the UK?

It certainly is. It's like a temple but isn't quite a temple, made entirely by hand in wood (though the columns are concrete and covered in wooded carvings). I can't remember exactly but they've been building it for around 40 years and I suspect it will take many more years to complete. Nothing like the scale of Barcelona's Sagrada Familia cathedral but those that come up with these long-term projects are true visionaries.

There's a restaurant and cafes, elephant rides around the sanctuary and a small zoo all on-site.
