I think that their political history really helps the Germans to see AfD for what they really are, and makes them hypersensitive to the very real risks that these parties pose. I attended mass in Gelsenkirchen the other week, a couple of weeks before the local state elections. At the end of the service, a couple of the younger members of the congregation took to the lectern to discuss what the local churches would be doing in the run up to the elections, and to implore the congregation to ensure that their vote reflected their Christian beliefs and values. I had a chat with them after the service, and expressed my surprise (based on the typical English 'separation of church and state') at how forthrightly they had spoken. They talked about how German history meant that the church could not simply stand by and remain neutral in the face of the threat posed by AfD, and highlighted the fact that the square in which the church sits (Heinrich König Platz) is named after a former pastor of the church, who had been executed in 1942 for opposing the Nazis. One can only hope that the news about Reform's former Welsh leader is only the tip of the iceberg, and that enough will come out in the not-too-distant future to fatally hole them below the waterline. | |
