It happened all of the time on the 80s - bizarrely the PL wanted to create more of an identity for each club and so the law requiring teams to wear non-clashing shorts was dropped but not for socks.
But some teams, like Man U, still opt to wear black shorts in such circumstances.
It’s only in the last few seasons that we seem to wear white shorts when away even when the other team is also wearing white shorts.
