| Those ridiculous penalty run-ups 13:09 - Oct 18 with 813 views | FoghornGleghorn | I really wish the game would outlaw these. A penalty isn’t a free goal, it’s a chance of a goal, and being able to take your time over a shot from 12 yards really ought to be enough of an advantage without being able to put the keeper off as well. But as much as anything, I wish managers would ban their players from doing them, because when they do them and still miss it’s just pathetic. Hirst, Taylor and Scott Fraser have all missed pivotal penalties for us in recent years by trying to be smart-arses with their run-ups. Just give them to someone who’s up for just running up and clouting it like footballers used to do before TikTok. | | | | |

Doesn’t do Kane any harm and his run up is ridiculous stop start bordering illegal - same for Toney. Unfortunately to have a stop start run up you have to have bottom corner accuracy as well which Hirst did not - same for Taylor who’s pens were pathetic. I don’t like them but if you they work for you then why not, but our pksyers look so scared of missing before they have taken it that it makes it far more likely to happen. Clarke is by far the best pen taker but then again he was taking them for Sunderland successfully also. Not sure what other players were like but don’t think it’s that much of a hard skill.

Weird thing is, Kane never used to do that, and never used to miss. Toney doesn't seem to really do a run-up, which is a different thing, and no real issues there. The shootout in the Euro final stands out though - Kane and Maguire just took theirs sensibly and scored, Rashford and Sancho arsed about with their run-ups and missed.
| Those ridiculous penalty run-ups on 16:31 - Oct 18 with 482 views | Nutkins_Return | Why does it matter? It really doesn't. Pens have been scored and missed in the history of penalty taking. Some are good at using a disjointed run up as a way of getting the keeper to blink first/confuse them and some are bad it. Some are good at pens generally and some are bad. Essentially we are only ever annoyed when some one misses. That's the end of it really. I've never seen a player for my team score and gone 'yes but I wish his run up was smoother'. | |

That's because every time a player for our team has arsed about with their run-up they've missed the penalty, and it's because of this trend to try to emulate the players who are better at doing it, who by doing so are gaining an unfair advantage over the keeper. And if the rules on it have been changed as per the earlier reply (not that I've noticed it being implemented), then evidently it matters.
