There is no point including last season. It was a different world, it came too soon in terms of us being able to compete in it.

That's not to say tonight wasn't a shambles.

Hasn't come too soon for Sunderland, it should be included although obviously allowances should be made to a degree.

I’m wondering if the league 1 and championship promotion seasons Were actually a bad thing for McKenna, because this whole playing out From the back worked so well, it has become ingrained in him, and he doesn’t know what else to do.

Well that's Sunderland. We came up two years into a five year project to get into the Premier League. Nothing was set up for it. Not the overseas networking, not the stadium, not the training ground, not the players. One moment we were drawing 2-2 with Fleetwood, next moment we were up against Liverpool and Man City. Very different circumstances.

No, it isn't. It's set up the club financially, so for all that tonight is bleak and the start of the season has been slow, we are better set up for the future on and off the pitch than we have been for decades.

I beg to differ, both teams spent a fortune, one has bought players for a team another for re-sale or stats in years gone by. One has adapted to their new league quickly the other hasn't.

Sunderland were also in L1 only a few years prior to going up.

But Sunderland came into the Premier League from a higher base point. They'd had three years in the Championship, they'd got an overseas network that allowed them to spend their money more efficiently. They were in the Premier League more recently than us whilst we were still putting in the necessary facilities as Liverpool rolled up. Getting to the Premier League has changed the club for the better in terms of finances, etc, but in terms of actually competing we were on a hiding to nothing.

I said McKenna , not the club, I’m just making the point , has it made McKenna stubborn in his tactics and approach, and unwillingness to change .. 3-0 down and playing it out from the back like we are 3-0 up.. utter madness.

Apologies you did. Still think it will serve him well in the long-term. He does need to learn from nights like this and it is worth noting that it has generally worked for him.

You can't just give an entire season a pass with the budget we had.

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?
