They've changed the junction to split A12 (W) and A12 (E) traffic when exiting M25 anti-clockwise. A12 (E) traffic now goes past the junction round one of those 270 degree bends and joins the A12 slightly west of the M25 to avoid the roundabout.

My question is this to anyone else who has used this new junction. Isn't it quicker just to exit the M25 s/p A12 (W), join the roundabout and exit A12 (E) i.e. the old route rather than drive an extra 1/2 mile round the new route?

Edit - google maps says it is actually 0.9m longer!

I wasn't wholly paying attention but I took that turning on the way to the game on Tuesday.

I was, however, heading to Shenfield station (on the A1023) to catch the train to Ipswich, and I think what you say is correct, although you might have to take the A1023 lane, rather than the A12(W) lane to get to the turning for the A12 north.

EDIT: A1032 not A1028

FURTHER EDIT; I keep getting it wrong. It's the A1023.

Have watched it being built, but haven’t yet used it. Logically 1/2 mile (30 seconds) at most times of day will be quicker/smoother than a slip road, and 2 or 3 sets of traffic lights.

Will cost you an extra 1p on the road tax in 2028 though……

The 1/2 mile takes somewhat longer than 30 seconds, you can't go 60mph round a relatively tight 270 degree bend! (I think it's actually closer to 3/4 mile but i estimated the roundabout route as 1/4 mile, so roughly 1/2 mile longer the other way)

My thought is check out the A14(W) / A1023 slip road as you approach in lane 2, ensuring nothing is in lane 1, and if barely any traffic at the lights, move to lane 1 and take the A14(W) / A1023 slip road.

When you also factor in about an extra 15 seconds to get to the A12(E) slip road, and also the A12(E) slip dumps you onto the A12(E) a few hundred yards back from where you would enter it from the roundabout, I'm fairly convinced the two sets of lights you need to go through will change quicker than the long detour.

Which is a bit of a design flaw in my view.

I always got the impression that there was always less traffic heading for the A12(W) than than the A12(E), so there may well be less traffic on the slip road than used to be the case.

If the worse comes to the worst, and you can't get onto the A12(E), I suppose you'd have to carry on round the roundabout and join the A12(W) and then take the next available junction enabling you to head back on the A12(E). I think that is at Gallows Corner, but I think the road may be shut there at the moment.

Maybe it's just simpler to take the new route.

I agree there is usually more traffic heading A12(E), so people taking the new slip road will lighten the load of the old one.

I have only taken the new slip road so far since it was changed so i don't know the new lane layout at the roundabout. I know A12(E) will have disappeared from the old slip road lanes, but will inevitably appear again as soon you pass the first set of lights, so if you're in the A1023 lane, I imagine it will not be difficult to join it.

Certainly simpler to take the new route if you can't stand that roundabout (which previously I disliked to be fair, because of the inadequate lane layout) - but 0.9 miles longer the other way? I think it's badly designed.

I do wonder whether it is worth the £175 million cost given the only time I have had issues was when the roundabout was closed due to climate protesters and I was stuck on the slip road.

The other thing is that it seems that the new slip road starts off as two lanes which goes down to one, and I wonder if that might be something that could cause congestion.

It does seem if there is any money going on transport it is the south that gets it.
