| False Economy 10:41 - Nov 11 with 1963 views | Churchman | I was at the Opticians today for the annual check. I go once a year because there is a history of glaucoma in the family. The Optician said that the Govt are pushing free eye tests for people with potential health conditions and the elderly out to two years. Why? To save money. The reality is that if I feel it necessary I will pay for an eye test in a years time. Why? Because it doesn’t get more precious than eyesight and I can afford it. So what about people who can’t afford it? Tough. Mrs C tells me breast screening is being pushed out for the same reason. Money. Yet if they find something or a person discovers a lump, it’s far harder, much more costly and life threatening than if caught early by screening. So when it comes to it, what are the govt there for? People’s well-being or their own? It would seem that for eye health anyway, they’re certainly not there for the poorest in society. | | | | |
| False Economy on 07:04 - Nov 12 with 214 views | Sikamikanico | If this is the case I'm probably going to have to move to the fully private optician close to where I live. I have an astigmatism and had a cataract start to develop at 41 that wasn't diagnosed until I was 43 but was removed pretty quickly. Also a couple of other things that need to be kept an eye on. Had an emergency appointment earlier this year and it was free because of the symptoms I had. Turns out I have a cataract developing in the other eye but as its my weaker eye its not as urgent Agree its a false economy. Im 47 and based on current retirement ages have another 21 years to work. Its already expensive enough as I need 3 or 4 pairs of glasses every time when you factor in varifocals, sunglasses, night driving glasses and computer glasses | | | |

| False Economy on 06:30 - Nov 12 by KingsCrossBlue | I was a 13 year old in Unst at the northern most tip of the Shetlands when that storm hit! My mum claimed earlier in the day, that it was ‘getting a tad breezy’ and then my dad came home from work early as ‘the radar station has blown in to the north sea’. It then get terrifying, I remember looking out of my bedroom window and seeing houses and cars flying through the air. I think we eventually evacuated to one of the messes on the camp. The single lads living there looked terrified - but they gave me a cab of lager and let me watch Predator on tele. I’m pretty sure I was off school for about 2 months as the storm destroyed pretty much everything that hadn’t been constructed by the military (minus a radar station). Only mention I can find is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom_weather_records *sorry didn’t mean to derail this thread, but haven’t met many folk who also witnessed this storm. *you weren’t there man* said in a glassy eyed, thousand feet stare |
That’s a fantastic account of it 👍 You didn’t derail if, if anyone did it was myself and Zombers, but in any case, diversions via Mornington Crescent are part of the magic of TWTD :) And its power in bringing together two random people who are meeting for the first time, another person who was actually there! | |
