This is slightly flippant / light-hearted, but do our transfer fees almost hint at part of the problem?

Leif aside, a few of our areas of weakness - GK distribution, a more rounded RB and a top class finisher - are quite well-correlated to our lesser areas of investment.

It feels very Chelsea to have spent all that money, and not have a CF of a proportionate value now.

GK: £2m (AP)
RB: £4m (DF)
CB: £15m (DO’S)
CB: £18m (JG)
LB: £1m (LD)
CM: £8m (AM)
CM: £10m (MN)
RW: £17.5m (SWE)
AM: £10m (SS)
LW: £20m (JP)
CF: £1.5m (GH)

*from a rough Google.

An interesting point, Chris and worth thinking on.

I actually think the keepers and Furlong are ok for this level. The issue is not the majority of the players. They’re better than most of the opposition. Cost is irrelevant. Players don’t set the fees or the wages. The problem is the sum of the parts. They don’t look a unified team at the moment.

Quoting GH at £1.5/is a little misleading as I suspect when he goes, probably at season’s end given the abuse he’s getting, his fee will be a lot more than that. Goalscorers are notoriously hard to find and while I’m sure we looked I assume there wasn’t one out there.

People were raving about Kone at the start of the season saying what a bargain he was. He looked as slow as old boots to me and very much L1 level.

As the title says, you get what you pay for.

Philogene’s been spectacular at times, but I can’t help but wonder if we’d have used that money on a striker in the summer, once Delap had gone, and just stuck with Clarke.

I know what you mean about Hirst, and in some ways, finishing isn’t his primary job. Maybe we’d struggle to find a striker to do that… but we do lack a real goal-getter, and it shows.

They cost the big bucks, but we’ve chosen to spend those elsewhere.

We wanted Ivan for most of the summer so he was a key target.

We've had bids in for other strikers as well. Wouldn't surprise me to see us go big in January on a striker and CM.

Truly impaired.

Plenty of examples where we aren’t seeing it.

Szmodics - not done a lot to justify the price tag.
McAteer - as above
Ogbene - looks a waste of money
Muric - didn’t work but might recoup most of it hopefully
Young - big wages
Johnson - as above
Greaves - is he any better than Burgess? I don’t know but I do know he’s £15m more expensive.
Akpom - we have to pay £7m if we go up and he’ll also be on huge wages.

I don’t think we’re getting enough value from any of those, albeit most still have time on their side.
