Baines's goal was a stunner, but not from 40 yards. I assumed it was a fluke at the time as it was his first ever senior goal, but he nearly repeated the feat 5 minutes later. No one realised at the time what a good player he was going to turn out to be.
The Baines goal was probably one of the best I had seen from an away team. Between 30 and 35 yards out i would say, not 40. The only other like it that I had seen was Emlyn Hughes back in nineteen hundred and frozen to death. Both great goals that even the home fans clapped.
