I think 86 Maradona was as close to football perfection as I have ever seen... Messi is incredible just feel Maradona's peak has been unmatched.

All of these players were wonderful. They are why we fall in love with the game. Seeing players that can do things with a football that defy the laws of physics. As a 8 yo I watched Pele at the 1970 world cup, and was in awe. Then 4 years later, Cruyff did things I'd never seen before. Then 4 years later again, Maradona. Ronaldhino was just ridiculously talented. Players I never saw at their prime include Duncan Edwards, Puskas, Eusebio, Stanley Matthews, Lev Yashin. What a privilege to have seen some of these greats in their prime. I bl00dy love football.

Eusebio! How could I forget Eusebio?!

Magical player.

Yes, but don't forget Lev Yashin. What a keeper. Does he still hold the record for most consecutive clean sheets?

AI Update:

Career Overview
Lev Yashin is widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers in history and the only one ever to win the Ballon d'Or in 1963. He registered over 270 career clean sheets in around 812 games for Dynamo Moscow and the Soviet Union national team. He earned 74 caps for the USSR national team, in which he conceded just 70 goals.
Comparison with Modern Records
Modern goalkeepers in international football have achieved higher total volumes of clean sheets, largely due to playing more international matches in the current era's expanded competition formats and extended careers.
Total International Clean Sheets: The record is held by Spain's Iker Casillas with 103 clean sheets in 167 international games. This is significantly more than Yashin's international tally. Other modern greats like Gianluigi Buffon and Peter Shilton also have higher international clean sheet counts.
Consecutive Minutes Without Conceding: Yashin's record for a specific streak is surpassed by the all-time international record holder, Italy's Dino Zoff, who went 1,142 minutes without allowing a goal between 1972 and 1974. This record still stands in modern football.
Impact and Innovation: Despite not holding the volume records, Yashin's impact on the game is arguably unparalleled. He is credited with redefining the goalkeeper's role, introducing the "sweeper-keeper" style, organizing his defense, and making over 150 penalty saves, a record that still stands today.
Ultimately, while the sheer number of clean sheets is higher for some modern players, Yashin's records remain impressive, and his standing as one of the sport's icons is undisputed, as he achieved his feats in a different era with fewer games and varied playing conditions.

George Best

In an age of animals, heavy kit, rubbish pitches he was simply unplayable.

Thread sorted!

But Best's purple patch was so short lived. Not even a handful of top level seasons.

Let's not forget that Lev Yashin had a Town pennant on his wall (given to him by Kevin Beattie allegedly):

The 2019 'Diego Maradona' documentary is essential viewing in my opinion. Really made me realise how incredible the guy was, even if a total lunatic at times and clearly high as a kite for a large part of his career, either through legal (painkiller) means or... otherwise. If he had had the protection from refs that the players (rightly) get these days, how many goals would he have scored?! Nearly had his leg amputated on the pitch via opposition tackles (might be slightly hyperbolic there) on more than one occasion.

Exactly, Maradona (and players from earlier eras such as Best) played in era of extreme brutality. Ball players are much more protected now, but defenders are better & quicker. All reasons why comparing the generations is near pointless.
All I can say is that Cruyff and Best were the two best players I saw play live.

Clearly not the greatest but many regard this guy as one of the most talented ever, he literally took the p*ss out of his opponents..
