| Ipswich 2 Sheffield Wednesday 0 1962 - match fixing convictions 14:14 - Jan 16 with 633 views | CopfordBlue | Anyone on here old enough to remember the game? If so, did anything strike you as odd at the time? I’m surprised there haven’t been more proven cases since. It must have happened many times. I’ve watched games live and on tv and had suspicions. In the early days of the premier league a team stayed up on the last day thanks to a win in their final game. The way the game played out, the goals, the goalkeeping. There’s no doubt in my mind it was fixed. | |

It was a nothing kind of game in December, if I recall correctly, which Ipswich won convincingly. Three Sheff Wed players - Peter Swan, Bronco Layne and Tony Kay - were all had up for match fixing, betting Ipswich to win. There didn't look anything suspicious about it at the time. Ipswich were the better team by far, but there were no dodgy decisions by the 3 players. In fact, if I recall, Tony Kay was given as the Man of the Match! I think Peter Swan later said that they didn't have to play badly or give penalties away etc as Ipswich were clearly the better team.

Agree entirely. There was nothing strange to remember about that game; though I was only eight years old at the time, standing on a box in Churchmans as per usual on a Saturday afternoon. However, I do recall my father being mightily surprised to read about the fixing allegations later.

There was a story that towards the end of a game, with the result more or less confirmed, that playing against us the Sheff Wed players would purposely concede a penalty as Ron Springet did not like the thought of Ted Phillips firing that old leather ball at him. The response was ‘I am diving to my left Ted’.

My Dad was at the game and he always told me there was nothing to suggest it was fixed at the time,as you say,he always said it was a pretty ordinary looking match. I also agree with the other poster,I have always wondered about that Everton match back in the day. Last game of the season. Were Wimbledon involved in it,or they had to lose heavily to someone and did, back when Wimbledon were a very hard nut to crack. I may be totally wrong of course,it was a while ago and my memory isn’t the best, but it was definitely to do with Everton. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I met Tony Kay in the early 70s. He had a bar in Salou and was doing water ski coaching. Fit as a butchers dog. He had all the newspaper cuttings on the wall of his bar and seemed quite proud of them (Kay outside the Old Bailey etc).
