In the bad buy column but not a terrible buy from a financial perspective. |
I'd say pretty bad from a financial perspective. From an FFP point of view in year maybe not a huge hit, but outside of that and in the 'real life' we've spent £9m + wages to get £4.5m back and very little value on the pitch.

| Sammie Szmodics to Derby is all systems go (n/t) on 16:48 - Jan 28 by _CliveBaker_ | It is a shame but also he fits a system that we've never played under McKenna, so to me its still a bit of a head scratcher why we bought him. He wasn't a 'panic buy' either, we chased him for ages. I would be really interested to know what role we had him earmarked for in a McKenna system. |
Not forgetting he played a fair bit on the left too. I know the old discussions about KM signs off all players. But transfers like this imo show it doesnt work like that all of the time. Weve had a fair few players join who dont actually suit mckenna football. Akpom being another.

Perhaps he was signed to play on the left, but I don't think its where he did his best work at Blackburn, he was more a 'false 9' playing off Gallagher and the shoulder of the opposition defence when I saw him. That's not really a role or profile we've ever seen in a McKenna side or system. He's industrious, quick, can finish. I'm not sure he's cute enough in possession like Clarke, Philogene, or Broadhead before them. I didn't really get it at the time and I still don't. No doubt he's been unlucky with injuries but on the face of it we paid pretty big money for someone of his age who wasn't an obvious profile for what we need. I think he'll do very well if he goes somewhere with a system that suits him. I don't want to see it don't get me wrong, but Norwich could do a lot worse if they cash in on Ronald McDonald and get Szmodics and Makama linked up.
