| Message from Amnesty International 19:27 - Jan 29 with 1002 views | Ryorry | Help influence new immigration proposals - UK government consultation Amnesty International logo Hi The Government has announced proposals to make very harmful changes to the immigration system. The proposals would affect many people living in the UK – including people born here and people who have lived here for many years. The proposals: In summary, most non-British citizens – except very high earners and people in senior positions in public services – will spend many more years in the immigration system before they may be permitted to become permanent residents (or then naturalise). This requires more applications to the Home Office with high fees, to continue their lives in the UK. They will continue to be excluded from public funds even if their lives are changed by illness or injury. This has dramatic implications for people and their families, including children born and growing up in the UK. This affects everyone, but refugees are among those most severely affected. What you can do: Your support is vital here. **Government consultations take notice of the number rather than quality of responses, so response makes a big difference.** Follow the Amnesty Guide and respond to the Government’s online survey. Encourage your family and friends to respond ** note that some Questions are deceptive. Our Amnesty Guide is useful to avoid answering in a way that is taken by the Government to mean something different to what you intended. Governments worldwide are imposing oppressive laws and cracking down on our freedoms, but together, we can fight back. Tot agree of course - must say I’m very curious as to what possible reason the downvoter could have for doing so unless it was a fat fingers accidental. | |

Not fat-fingered at all, I am sure. In keeping with their current thread.

Every migrant and especially every refugee seeking asylum, fleeing from persecution has a different story. They need to be dealt with on a case by case basis but there are so many cases and in all probability there will be more each year for the foreseeable future. Tragedies have happened and there will probably be new ones, we don't live in a World that is perfect for us and that weighty requirement for eternal vigilance seems to be as urgent as it is during wartime. So whilst becoming saddened by watching people respond to the dog whistle tactics of parties who seek to profit from tragedy is understandable it may not be a winning strategy. Keeping the lines of communication open and listening are as important as giving out the reasons for our state to continue to fulfill its international obligations.

100%. When will narrow-minded people ever listen to, let alone understand & accept, the view of not only the first astronauts in space over half a century ago, but pretty much every astronaut ever since - ie that from space, earth has no borders. Humankind needs to start co-operating globally re climate change and resources if we are to survive. You’d think they’d at least try to understand it from their kids/grandkids perspective, but I fear that a Mad Max attitude prevails for many. “What you realize is every single person that you know is sustained and inside of that green line and everything else outside of it is completely inhospitable. You don’t see borders, you don’t see religious lines, you don’t see political boundaries. All you see is Earth and you see that we are way more alike than we are different.” https://www.nasa.gov/centers-a

True it's sad when Labour voters parrot the 'Stop The Boats' approach, even if the Party does not use that slogan, but for you to take an ad hominem stance is a bit sad as well (and on three word slogans I found this interesting https://theboar.org/2020/11/sl as the over simplification of complex issues seems to be the bane of our times. We can't push back against a weakening of our perceived codes of conduct if we are not in the Party and and also not listening to the concerns of Labour voters.

Two of em now. I mean considering that the proposal is to include kids of any age born in the UK who’ve never known any other life …

That;s an interesting observation, thanks for the heads up. However on checking Wikipedia I find: 'a Palestinian prisoner and novelist who was imprisoned for 38 years after he was convicted of commanding a Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP)-affiliated group that abducted and killed an Israeli soldier. He was not convicted of the murder, but of commanding the group, a charge he rejected.' 'Daqqa was arrested on 25 March 1986 and accused of either being a member or commander, of the PFLP-affiliated group that abducted and killed Tamam. Daqqa was not present at the time of the abduction and, in March 1987 was convicted of commanding the group, an accusation he always denied. The Palestinian state news agency Wafa described Daqqa as a "freedom fighter" and described the PFLP members convicted of killing Tamam as "his companions". According to Amnesty International, his conviction was based on emergency regulations enacted by British authorities in Mandatory Palestine, which allow for a lower threshold for proof than the criteria used in Israeli criminal law.' So not quite as you stated if we are looking for conclusive proof, in fact it seems that the Israeli court accepted that he was not present. And as far as lamenting his death all i can see is an, understandable given their remit, comment upon denial of family rights: 'Senior researcher Erika Guevara Rosas at Amnesty International wrote upon Daqqa's death that: Even on his deathbed, Israeli authorities continued to display chilling levels of cruelty against Walid Daqqah and his family, not only denying him adequate medical treatment and suitable food, but also preventing him from saying a final goodbye to his wife Sanaa Salameh and their four-year-old daughter Milad.'
