Playing against a 5-3-2 08:49 - Feb 2 with 469 viewsIPSWICHFANITFC

This formation is the blueprint for opposition teams playing against us this season. Charlton did it and Preston did it (EDIT, Wrexham also did it I believe?). All got something out of the game and frustrated us. I did a post similar after the Charlton game saying that 5-3-2 is the best formation to use against us. Low block, 3 men (wing back, wide CB and wide CM) covering wider areas & 2 up top as a threat the other way.

We struggle to break that formation down as the areas we look to exploit on the ball are nullified. Charlton went man for man in midfield whereas Preston were organised and disciplined in covering areas of the pitch to stop us from overloading etc. Both tactics were effective and resulted in us passing the ball sideways.

Fortunately, not many teams play a 5-3-2 but it really is the blueprint if you want a result against us. That said, McKenna needed to adapt in game with a formation or tactics tweak to confuse Preston on what we were trying as it all became a bit predictable in the end as we do not change from our way of playing.

Poll: If selling Jackson meant getting in a wide man, would you be happy with Garbutt?

Its not KM who needs to adapt. We had chances to score. Big big chances.

What does happen around those chances which I think gets the fans in the grrrr stage is we go through stages of slowing the play down. That slowness does not help against that formation as we showed when we had the big chances. It was quick passing and movement that set them up.

It's never easy to break down a team that wants to sit and play on the break. There is a reason why sides use it as a tactic, it's effective.

It denies space for the opposition (us) to play through or wide. There is a also not a lot of space to hit over and play in behind. Which is why we see us (and other teams) keep possession and move the ball side to side to try and create some space to place into but Preston were diligent and well drilled - they kept their shape well.

That said, we had chances to win the game, Hirst had two or three chances, one very good one, Kipre's header, Mehmeti's shot.

So, again, we did create scoring chances but didn't convert them.

Could we have created more? For sure. It was a poor afternoon and we did struggle and we we far from our fluent best but we did create and enough to win the game to be fair.

Change of tempo is key in football though Frimmers. I think that's lost sometimes.

The reason those chances were created was because we moved from a slow tempo to a fast tempo - that change of pace is part of the reason 'why' those chances were created.

It's about choosing those moments to speed up or slow down. Slowing things down is as important as speeding things up.

KM does need to adapt though.

Could we have gone from playing a double pivot to a single pivot? An extra man positioned further forward with 3rd man runs (Taylor is brilliant at it).

Mehmeti (who was my MOTM) was going very wide to pick up the ball where he has little effect on the attack. We want him more central in dangerous areas where he can hurt the opposition. How could we tweak it to get our most dangerous player in those areas to hurt?

Could someone other than Burns threaten with a run in behind? It's a question I feel we don't ask enough. Szmodics is brilliant at running beyond the striker, but we don't play to his strengths.

They are just examples but of course, every manager can adapt. Ball speed and tempo is critical which I agree on, but their 5-3-2 filled the gaps we look to exploit in possession, forcing us to go sideways.

Preston only actually had one forward on the pitch at the start of the game, their formation was 3-6-1
