There was talk in the distant past about the former airport and the showground, but also they were not that serious and the fans did not want. It is an absolute boon to the club and town that the ground is so central. The experience of going to eg Derby or Colchester is horrific for travel, matchday experience, after game drinks etc, and for those of us who want to visit the place and not just the game (I had a wonderful day exploring Preston this season) out of town stadia are just garbage. The club are lucky with the location and also the potential for expansion and good relations with the council. No need to move from a capacity, architectural, planning or financial reason. |
Great post. Portman Road should always be our home. So many clubs have sold their soul by moving. This article relevant. https://www.theguardian.com/fo

Not sure on that. Goodison was way past its use by date, it was an impossible site to refurbish. I think they had to move and tbf the docks location makes a lot of sense - it's not a long way away, it could be part of a new development, and could also be a bespoke new home. I went up there and spent a day interviewing the architect of the new stadium, walking around the entire area, and also speaking to some landlords and others near the new location for an article I wrote for a US architecture publication. I have many reservations over the new stadium itself, which i explored in that piece a bit, but I am not 100% in line with this article: places do change and social use of areas change, that's normal in cities. Just as these will change their incomes and saturday crowds (many will still visit these pubs on route to the stadium, though) many pubs near the docks that have hung on through years of abandonemnt are now enjoying new visitors. And many of them are very good and deserve some income finally. Also, something that';s great about Everton's move, is that they are retaining Goodison for the women's team and as a base for their very good community outreach. They are not abandoning the area (as many do) and these pubs and other venues will still have matchday and general public, just they will change and adapt to shifting dynamics.

I've been to the HD. It's more impressive from the outside I have to say. My seats high in a corner were a bit sterile and the pitch seemed miles away. That said it's a half hour walk from the city centre and there is lots of development springing up around the ground, including bars etc. They need to do something about people flow around the ground as there can be bottlenecks.
