just got back from Watford game, obviously a great result and a great time had

called someone out for being homophobic at the game, got repeatedly called a d1ckhead from a very angry an embarrassed man who carried on at it before later denying he'd ever mentioned Elton John's sexuality

train back a bunch of men being generally intimidating and singing songs about George Hirst hating Palestine. simply asked them why does George Hirst hate Palestine to which one of them said 'shouldn't start wars you can't win'

more and more of this weird behaviour going on at Ipswich games - witnessed a lot of this stuff in the past year where there seemed to be very little before

anyone else finding this quite depressing and a bit difficult to take?

Idiots gonna idiot I suppose.

The strange thing is, with opinion regarding Hirst as it is currently, I can't tell whether the morons shouting that were (a) expressing solidarity with Palestine, (b) expressing purported hatred of Palestine, or (c) clueless as to what or where Palestine is, but just shouting some stupid beered-up slogan.

As for the homophobia, I am genuinely heartened and optimistic that the tide on this is only going one way, and people shouting homophobic slurs are so obviously in a backward minority that are on the wrong side of history. Shame on them. And hopefully: education on them!

Well done for calling it out.

And Elton John is an absolute dude, even if his football team do wear yellow!

I would sort of agree with you on the homophobia thing in terms of moving the right way. But my daughter suggests it’s still not the case. Maybe less so than when I was young, but she tells me her friends now, don’t feel equal at all. I’m not gay and not qualified to judge and I’ll take her word on that.

The Palestine thing. It’s become a trend for the right wing lads to do this stuff. Seen it on here this week.

Trailing vapour since 1999.

oh I think they were expressing anti-Palestine sentiment

thought about asking them what makes them feel this way but tbh you wouldn't have wanted a punch off one or two of these guys and they look like they might've been happy to deal it out

agree re homophobia, he even said at half time 'how can I be homophobic, I'm friends with one of them'

if he shows me up by bringing said friend to sheffield wednesday I'll gladly eat a humble pukka pie

Pukka pies are never the wrong answer, but you don't have to eat a humble one. Even if he is friends with "one", it doesn't prove that he doesn't hold awful views, but in any event, mindless chanting can affect others regardless of what you actually think.

Shame re Palestine. It is a complex issue, and there are intelligent, reasonable and sensitive people who adopt a range of views on the tragic conflict in the middle east. Reducing it to such banality is truly a sign of the massive privilege that we in a safe western country have - you can, if you so desire, shout whatever offensive nonsense you like, reasonably safe in the knowledge that neither terrifying terrorism nor constant bombardment are unlikely to be visited upon us.

It is a privilege that should not be exercised.

And what the hell has George Hirst (another issue on which we have a range of views!) got to do with middle eastern current affairs? The mind boggles.

Carry on being better than me, that's all I'll say! Calling things out, especially when concerned about a knuckle sandwich, is a brave and noble thing. We'd all like to think we'd do it. Few of us do.

We've certainly moved along way forward with regards to homophobia since I was in my teens.

When my daughter came out at the age of 13 there was a dedicated LGBTQ+ counsellor at her school and there were openly trans pupils who felt comfortable expressing their identity.

When i was at high school no one would have dared come out. They would have been ridiculed and bullied. I can't begin to imagine how a trans person would have been treated at my old high school.

edit. Just seen VT's post. He's right. To those of us who aren't gay the perception that things have moved forward massively may not be the reality for those who are gay.

He doesn’t. It’s just a copy of a Leeds song… which makes it even worse. Granted the context of the Leeds song / player makes more sense (Still horrendous thought), for Hirst it makes them look like absolute tools for signing it.

so pretty much on par with that god awful "i dont care about Omari" song.
My entire body sucks itself side when i hear that
