Away results and travel distance 16:06 - Feb 26 with 723 viewsEsherBlueStu

I’ve had a hypothesis that has been in the back of my mind for a few weeks which was reinforced by our last two away results which I’ve now had a chance to do the maths on. My hypothesis is that we perform particularly poorly on long away days but better on short journeys. Based on ground to ground travel distances on Google Maps here are a few facts.

Our total away record is:
W6 D4 L6 Pts 22 PPG 1.375
Journeys over 200 miles (Swansea, Blackburn, Bristol City, Preston, Middlesbrough, Wrexham)
W1 D2 L3 Pts 5 PPG 0.83 (calc corrected)
Journeys under 200 miles
W5 D2 L3 Pts 17 PPG 1.7

The good news is we have no more journeys over 200 miles left!

The average distance to the games that…
We won = 158miles
We drew= 175miles
We lost= 198miles

The good news is our average miles to our remaining 7 games is 142miles and still only 158miles if we exclude Norwich.

I realise there’s lies, damned lies and statistics but I do really believe our performances a long way from home have been genuinely worse.

You can now all throw stones but perhaps another reason to be optimistic about the run in…

Well, stats and statistics don't lie, whatever anyone says. However they get interpreted by human beings who sometimes can come up with different interpretations, especially if they have their own agendas! This one is interesting, I wonder how it would stack up against our last Championship season?

Love it. I can’t imagine there’s much difference between 175 mls and 198 mls once you’ve factored everything else in. Maybe the travel time is just as important? Or mode of transport? Do we do better when using the coach rather than flying for example?

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

Is Hull over 200 miles? We won there of course.
