Not that is matters now and can’t bring myself to watch it back but my initial reaction when ball went in for the penalty was their striker was offside

Oh well, you win some you lose some.

That's football. (Or, it was).

A defender who steps behind their own goal line without the referee's permission is still considered to be on the goal line for offside purposes. They continue to play attackers onside until the next stoppage or until the defending team clears the ball outside the penalty area.

Key rules regarding this scenario:

Defensive Action: If a defender leaves the field to intentionally play an attacker offside, they are deemed to be on the goal line to prevent this tactic.

Caution: If the defender deliberately leaves the pitch and does not have permission, they should be cautioned (yellow card) when the ball is next out of play.

Attacker Action: If an attacker is behind the goal line (in the goal) when the ball enters, they are considered on the goal line for offside; a goal is awarded unless they were already in an offside position or committed an infraction.

Natural Motion: If a defender leaves the pitch as part of a normal, non-deliberate playing movement, this rule still applies.

It was very tight, I thought it was at first but it's too close to call from the TV angle. I think if it is offside the linesman can be forgiven for not seeing it because it must be so tight

Regarding the first goal
As bsw72 has already said,
we had a player over the line in the goal
he is still 'in play'
therefore playing the Stoke player onside.
