Also a reminder of football's lasting prejudice against gay people. https://www.theguardian.com/fo Norwich Player of the Year 1979 though, anyone remember him was he any good?

Nice guy and was so similar in looks to his younger brother. Must have been such a sad day in that family , all those years ago , all because of prejudice...Have times really changed though ?

| Interesting piece on ex-Norwich player Tony Powell on 08:45 - Mar 17 with 1540 views | Churchman | Thank you for posting. Interesting and I look forward to seeing the documentary. I remember his name, face and would have seen him play, but in all honesty I don’t remember if Powell was any good or anything much about him as a player. Perhaps Stow does. With regard to your first line, I think that progress has been made on prejudices when I think back to how it was when I was growing up/young, but there’s a long way and a few generations to go before it is as it should be. The great Michael Holding did a short documentary on racism and put it that way. He said it’s something, in the case of racism, progress but has to be worked on, to paraphrase him. He is of course right and the same applies to all forms of prejudice. | | | |

Problem is, as with racism, it only takes a handful of dimwits who think it's "funny" (e.g. the Fashanu song), or who are genuinely prejudiced and thuggish enough to want to express it, to make someone's life a misery (c.f. Vinicius Junior's experiences). Other fans can help, but most people don't go to the football to get into a fight with probably drunk yobs or lairy groups of youth.

"With regard to your first line, I think that progress has been made on prejudices when I think back to how it was when I was growing up/young, but there’s a long way and a few generations to go before it is as it should be." Yes, I wrote 'deep' initially and then changed it because in many ways has improved but quite easy for bigots at either end of the scale - enormously wealthy tech owners or pissed up kids on an away day - to set things back. It doesn't help that players are able to use religious exemptions to excuse continued prejudice either, conflicting viewpoints may be difficult to mange but it was disappointing to see how the club ignored this last season with Morsy's reluctance to wear the rainbow armband.

Football has moved forward with many prejudices with the glaring exception of homophonia. Clearly will have been a number of gay players in the top divisions over the last few years but even now in society not supported/to scared of being able to come out which is very sad .

You are right. Most people don’t go to football to get into fights and most people are incapable of doing so anyway, whether it be age, will, capacity, knowledge/training, numbers or situation. It’s easy for people to say what they’d do bravely hiding behind a keyboard. What you have done and would do in real life is often totally another matter. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

John was not in the least supportive of his brother and has made homophobic comments in the past. He has probably swung with public opinion now as it was all a long time ago. My brother knew him as shared the same apartment in Norwich.
| Interesting piece on ex-Norwich player Tony Powell on 19:57 - Mar 17 with 678 views | armchaircritic59 | I am a member of the LGTB+ tribe. I can only speak for myself personally, but I think I take a fairly rare view on things. I really don't care what other people think or say about me, not one tiny bit. All they are doing is showing their own ill formed prejudice's and ignorance. Personally I do one of two things only if anything happens. Either totally ignore, or just laugh. If these sort of " people " don't have their idiocy fed, eventually they'll just give up. The bonus is, it also usually winds them up even futher! | | | |
