So who else had read 'The Ragged-Trousered Philanthropists' by Robert Tressell ? 10:08 - Jul 3 with 2067 viewsWeWereZombies

I was sort of surprised that Norman Cook (Fatboy Slim) chose this as his desert island read this morning ( https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/p ) I read it in my late teens and I have not felt the need to re-read it, there's so much else to get through, but he seems to find a lasting impact in it. Anyone else ?

Have you tried ‘The Outsider’ (aka The Stranger) by Camus? Does at least have the advantage of being very short, iirc! As well as rather good.

Think I did get to the end of The Age of Reason, but can’t remember anything whatsoever about it!

Here's an easier read with a Suffolk twang...

....having worked where it's set makes it particularly interesting.

On a similar note and set on the Suffolk/Essex border, “Reuben’s Corner” by Spike Mays is an interesting book.

Better to stay silent and be thought a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubt

Talking about books which are a bit of a struggle, I read the first 100 pages of Don Quixote many years ago but found it too repetitive.

And last year, I read to the first volume of Proust's Remembrance of Things Past (or In Search of Lost Time). Only another 2,800 pages to go!

this chimes with me. I slogged through D.Q though the best bits are in the earler pages. Just a slow descent into madness and a relief to get to the end.
As for Proust, I did not even get through the first volume. I can see the 6 volumes languishing largely unread on a shelf. The pace was maybe too slow.
Currently reading A Fox Under my Cloak by Henry Williamson. Novel loosely based on his life, part of a 15 book series. I am reading his WW1 experiences, which alone covers 5 books. He was the writer of Tarka the Otter and the series was recommended by someone on TWTD, for which I thank that person.

Also couldn't get far into DQ, one of those where the idea seems way better than the manifestation! Even a BBC radio adaptation was so hard to follow & unappealing that I gave up on it after ep 1.

I loved - and still do - The Outsider and The Fall by Camus. This was my "French Period". I read Gide and J P Sartre too. As a teenager I pretentiously took up smoking Gauloises and probably stunk the house out. I never went as far as wearing a beret though. A little later I started reading Kafka and promptly took up pipe smoking at the age of 19 - and probably talked absolute b******s about life and literature to anyone who listened.
Happy days.

The Plague by Camus is good too. Loved Hugo and Dumas too when I was younger. I read Germinal by Emile Zola recently, set in the mining industry in 19th century France. That was interesting and evocative. Would recommend it.

We're in synch re all those :) Didn't read Germinal though, just heard it as a radio adaptation (was serialised I think - many years ago now).
