Highly aerobatic powerful two seat aeroplanes powered by a Lycoming engine that’s double the power of a normal small aircraft. Mated to a light weight body they really perform well. Lucky you seeing those! I don’t think I ever have. The Consolidated PBY Catalina had a fantastic service life. It was a maid of all work and greater numbers were produced and deployed than any other flying boat. It was not the easiest to fly and was desperately slow. It also was limited in what it could carry, not being the largest. However, it was operationally flexible helped by being able to land on sea or land and could perform most tasks well, hence its popularity with a lot of air forces and in civilian guise (water bombers etc). A Coastal Command Catalina of course rediscovered Bismarck after it’d destroyed HMS Hood and disappeared from radar view. Without that, Bismarck might well have made it to safety.

Yes 4 of them flew over,I could hear them coming for a while to. The Catalina is a beautiful aircraft,it just plods along not that high either. That’s flying for me plodding along having a trunk out of the window,it made a nice change from the traffic from Stansted airport. Cheers for the information 👍
