Huh. Keir Starmer receives Légion d’honneur 19:40 - Jul 14 with 3404 viewsSwansea_Blue

The first time it’s been awarded to a UK PM.

No pressure Andy lol!

Neither of Truss or Johnson were as deceitful and lacking ability as Starmer. I mean Johnson can at least speak in public! He's what he is - a cad and bounder who's not daft and has charisma. A different disaster as PM of course.

Truss at least kept things mercifully short.

Starmer is the most deceitful PM we've ever had and has no political acumen.

Forensic we were told...

Can't agree.

More of a disgrace than his predecessors.

Sanctimonious rubbish on display today in PMQs from him and the media.

If he was that great why did they get rid of him ?

Hell hath no fury than a Corbynite scorned .

That’s just bonkers to think Truss or Johnson had more ability, but I guess that’s where the schism in the Labour Party has led to. Not that I don’t agree in general that he’s been a devious bloke who’s caused huge damage to the party’s reputation, but a bit of perspective is needed imo. Truss and Johnson were off the charts bad different reasons. People quickly forget how utterly awful they were.

I suppose the point here is that they were rightly booted out at the ballot box in 2024, directly because of the incompetence of those two.

Labour trying to save themselves from the same outcome but I suspect can't

It would be useful to me at least if you laid out in relatively simple terms what you expect from a UK government.

It is a little tiresome to be lectured "*now extrapolate", "think further", etc) and to get nothing but approbrium for the curent PM to the extent that you compare him disfavourably to the likes of the self-seving Johnson (the pre-Trumpian exemplar of someone in it for themselves) and the perfect example of Peter Principle Truss.

I have no great axe to grind re. Starmer, particularly given the circumstances under which he was elected and the wider implications of that episode for the Labour Party but whilst I have a pretty clear picture of what you dislike I have no idea of what you are "for".

Poll: As we are indulging in pointless quesions. If my aunt had balls would she be ...

I expect principles, honesty, intelligence and leadership.

It was obvious as early as 2020 that we weren't getting any of those under Starmer. Quite the opposite!

Johnson was at least himself. And he is at least able to speak.

What I'm for is someone with principles and ability. You won't find either of those things in the current Labour party.

Burnham bottling the cabinet picks already.

Country is in trouble.

Well you got no principles from the man you have now vaunted twice, nor honesty, nor leadership. I don't think Johnson has ever displayed his real self in public, he daren't; there is even the possibillity that he has forgotten who the "real" Boris Johnson is. If you believe that the man can speak I can only assume you have fallen for the charade.

If you truly expect principles, honesty, intelligence and leadership then I'm afraid you'll have to come up with a way better exemplar than the only PM this country has had who comitted a criminal offence whilst in office.

Johnson told fewer lies that Starmer and he can speak in public and has some intellect. So that puts him miles above Starmer.

And I agree Johnson was a disaster!

Labour have certainly made it difficult for themselves haven’t they. I suspect you’re right and too much damage has been done by their political inconsistency and naivety - trying to be all things to all people, but just peeing off everyone instead. All while people don’t feel tangible improvements in their lives and are surrounded by 24/7 doom and gloom in the news (not all of that is the government’s fault of course, but they do have to operate within the current reality and present a clear, confident position in relation to world politics too - Ukraine/Russia, Middle East, Trump, surging energy prices, Brexit impacts, etc).

Johnson is a chancer who, through privilege, had the opportunity of taking advantage of the so called benefits of an Eton and Oxbridge education - an opportunity he largely spurned absorbing only the "born to rule" undercurrent of that Eton primer. Churchill said that, "It is a good thing for an uneducated man to read books of quotations." Johnson seems to have taken that on board but seems also to have failed to correctly remember anything he read.

That you use such a person to continue to beat Starmer with has still not brought me any closer to understanding what it is you want other than to pillory the soon to be replaced PM.

Will Johnson be your comparitor for your assessment of Burnham's tenure?

I do not feel at all happy with the path the Labour Party has chosen in recent years and which culminated in the Starmer premiereship - perhaps best summed up for me by asking, "Where is the hope?". However, to suggest in any way that Johnson (let alone Truss who you cited previously as well) was "better" (better for whom? Certainly not me nor anyone in my circle of family and friends) smacks of a personal vendetta and lack of proper analysis.

Johnson is what he is.

Starmer was a fraud from the start.

Burnham is picking a chancellor based on sodding Louise Haigh's pathetic factionalism. He's going to be no different.

The Labour right are the very worst people at the very worst time.

I'd definitely pop over to Bentley to have a look at it.
( ok to park on yer drive Nig style?)

I remember dropping coins off the top it on a school trip as a kid. Though obviously wouldn't wanna damage the glorious lawn of the village green below.

Only if Nige isn’t using one of the spaces.

You went to Paris on a school trip,we only got as fair as Calais, and I got roughed up by some French yoofs, they knicked my money and a pen I had with a lady in a bikini on,you tipped the pen and she took the bikini off,my mates were all buying flick knives the tits !

I think it depends on whether one was a Labour party member as to one's thinking on this.

Starmer was very ruthless, and was far more deceitful than I would have expected of a fellow lawyer but maybe that's politics for you.

A few examples

1. Margaret Hodge said it had been suggested to her that Starmer was lying with his 10 pledges in order to win the leadership election.

2. Starmer said the following in 2020 but proceeded to control selections absolutely and impose right wing candidates.

"The selections for Labour candidates needs to be more democratic, and we should end NEC impositions of candidates. Local party members should select their candidates
for every election."

3. Starmer was just as slippery at PMQs as Johnson and very rarely answered the question.

4. His sacking of Olly Robins was a disgrace and made a mockery of his statement of support for the Civil Service yesterday.

5. He claimed that the two-child benefit cap removal was his finest achievement but was forced into this.

I am no Starmer supporter and ended my membership of the Labour Party during the Blair years - perhaps I am guilty of not takng a close enough look at the detail of the Party's internal machinery (machinations?) since that time.

There can be little doubt that Starmer's "10 pledges" have been largely ignored or significantly watered down - whether that occured because of initial deceit or later re-assessment I couldn't say (but am cynical enough to accept the former).

Like you I believe his treatment of Olly Robins is a stain he will find it difficult, perhaps impossible, to remove.

What I really cannot countenance, however, is that Johnson was in any way a more fitting example of what a PM should be (slipperiness by ministers in the Commons is something I expect I'm afraid, regardless of party; the point scoring is all it seems) based simply on things like an imagined intellect, a questionable skill in publc speaking and the fact that we all expected him to lie and so were perhaps more able to ignore/accept it when he did.

As a former member of the Party I still hold its representatives to a higher standard and am therefore as disappointed as anyone else by Starmer. It massively over-eggs the pudding, though, to push Johnson as a relative pinnacle of integrity.

I resigned during Blair's term because of policy, and not for the Iraq war, but re-joined when Brown took over.

EDIT: as regards deceit, I am not saying Starmer's was of a different order to Johnson's but it was of a different nature and so less obvious.

I assume (forgive me if incorrectly) that you are on the left of political thinking.

Do you not think Labour could be more electable if they break from this Fabian outlook and select more genuine, reforming type leaders? It’s also very clear that a different type of voice, would help.
Burnham isn’t a Fabian, but he’s a career politician who studies English Literature at Cambridge. I don’t think that automatically discredits him, but I see nothing from what he says to give optimism
