Interesting comment from my local business restaurant owner 20:02 - Jul 19 with 1021 viewsearlsgreenblue

Just came home from Sunday evening dinner at my local beachside restaurant, asking a Portuguese who’s going to win the World Cup? She answered “ Spain I hope” I didn’t expect that given the Portuguese vs Espana rivalry. I asked a bit more to be told “ isn’t the world hoping for that, everyone hates Argentina” blimey that’s not what I expected!

It's strange because they're next door to each other but Portugal-Spain isn't much of a rivalry in my experience.

But yeah, everyone does hate Argentina.

Just tell a bar full of Portuguese that they’re just second rate Spaniards and were one and the same country between 1580 and 1640 and you are guaranteed entertainment.

Actually, I like the Portuguese and their lovely country. I’ve found them in general nicer than the Spanish (who are ok).

I find Spain very regionalised in terms of friendliness. Lots of Northern European tourists (or "guiris" as they call them) = quite unfriendly. Not so many guiri visitors = very friendly.

Madrid is much friendlier than Barcelona, the interior friendlier than the coasts, the Northern parts (Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, Basque Country) are the best bits.
