Jeffrey Archer RIP 21:32 - Oct 5 with 3169 viewsitfcjoe

I know they aren’t literary masterpieces but I’ve enjoyed most of his books, a new one is out this week so a real shame he doesn’t get the chance to promote it

Certainly a chequered life, but one well lived!

Years ago I met Jeffrey and Mary Archer in Grantchester whilst I was working in the Cambridge area. They were very pleasant. RIP Jeffrey.

I bear him no ill will but the description of his wife as fragrant always made me laugh because it suggested a little "bias" on the part of the judge..

"During the 1987 libel trial Mary Archer famously took the stand to support her husband.

The judge was so impressed by her demeanour that he mused why any husband would seek the company of a prostitute when he had Mrs Archer at home.

Summing up, Mr Justice Caulfield described Mrs Archer as a vision of "elegance, fragrance and radiance".

Lord Archer won his libel action and was awarded £500,000 damages."

I sat across a waiting room from Mary Archer at Addenbrookes once, that hairdo must have taken ages and cost a fortune.

Archer also got away with blatant insider dealing when buying shares in Anglia TV (of which the fragrant Mary was a director) the day before a takeover was announced. To cover his tracks, Archer bought the shares not in his name, but in the names of an associate, Broosk Saib. The DTI wisely decided there was "insufficient evidence" to prosecute Archer.
