Depends how tired Maeda is after his travelling. But I'd go for Clarke - assuming he isn't required to stand in for Fatawu on the right, which I'd be less keen on. In which case it defaults to Philogene, who would also cause them problems.

Mehmeti is also an outside possibility, but not one I'd favour. Perhaps Flemming, but that takes out one of our striking options.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

I suppose it depends what you think he's weak at?

Bad one on one defender? Jack Clarke. Doesn't get tight enough to his man? Philogene. Leaves spaces in behind? Maeda.

That's the Premier League for you, when your 300+ top flight appearances and 70+ Belgium capped 30 year old full back is the weakest link.

I wouldn't mind seeing Maeda come back in, hasn't really got going yet but he works hard and presses well. Think he might start on the right though in Fatawu's absence and help keep Robinson honest. Clarke or Philogene on the left.

I'd be amazed if it's not Maeda right. Came on there as a sub hasn't he. No reason for Clarke to lose his spot on the left.

It will surely be JP or JC. As I said on another thread they have had two weeks to practise with GON / coaching staff and both our right back choices.

He will have tried them both on both wings over the break and realistically:
JP on right and JC left > JP or left and JC on right.

Maeda has legs but given time on the training ground and freshness alone I would expect him to start this game as a sub.

Most of their threat comes from Robinson down the right. He is their Leif Davis. So I'd be going with Maeda's pressing and work rate on that side.

Who would you favour on the right instead of Clarke, as a matter of interest?

I think Maeda is the default on the left and probably counters their right sided threat better than our other options. And I wouldn't favour starting McAteer or Egeli on the right, so in my view that leaves Clarke/Philogene on the right. Not ideal, but a symptom of our expensive failures in recruiting less effective replacements for Wes on that side.

I suppose the alternative argument is that McAteer is a round peg in a round hole, is still learning, puts in a shift, and has had a fair bit of time with GON now to understand what is wanted of him in this set up. It seems reasonably clear that GON is not suddenly going to try Egeli out on the right. Which is a good thing, for all his potential.

Either Ouattara, with O'Shea behind him (Diop and Greaves at CB), or McAteer - who I trust more than many on here - with Ouattara at RB.

Maeda's been dropped on the left for Clarke? And then come on as a sub in games on the right?

Can't quite see why you'd be so certain Maeda starts on the left with one of the other two drawing the short straw for right wing.

His work rate is incredible but his legs will be MUCH more tired than Philogene.
I am not Philogene's biggest fan but it is a disservice to pretend he is also not rapid and improved at his defensive work a lot last season.

Also considering Leif and Outtara were also available I imagine they have been imitating Robinson and Iwobi doing exactly that over the last two weeks.

Which is why I'm backing the fresher two players who were doing that preparation for this game.

Ha, yes indeed, easy job playing in the PL isn't it :) Castagne probably isn't quite the player he once was, he certainly was very decent indeed, but I doubt he's fallen off a cliff, performance wise.

You aren't wrong but it's crazy how tough the prem is that a weak link is someone as established as Castagne.

Fulham at home certainly a game we should be targeting to win but they have some real talent. Josh King is a super player.

Poll: Will Paul Lambert be Ipswich Town manager on the final day of this season ?
