| RIP Jesus de Miguel such a tragedy, on 00:42 - Nov 4 by IPS_wich | I think you need to go and rewatch the Schumacher incident again and reevaluate that statement. Schumacher was about 2 seconds late on the player and the replay shows he never once took his eyes off the player - it was absolutely intentional. This one was reckless, but there was a less than half a second between Miguel touching the ball and the keeper crashing into him. It was a red card +++ but it was nothing more than reckless compared to Schumacher's assault. |
You honestly think there is 2 seconds between Battiston touching the ball and Schumacher flattening Battiston ? Schumacher flew through the air out of control, half turned to protect himself and wiped out Battiston. Obviously terrible, especially in such a high-profile match. Both incidents are about taking ball, if not then the man or both. Both are equally premeditated, both are put in a bad situation and get it wrong BUT Schumacher did not lead with the knee like this at high speed. It was beyond reckless. It is a serious injury/ death waiting to happen. High speed collisions are occasionally going to happen but you do not put your knee up like this, if you do and connect, there can only be serious damage, it was totally cowardly. https://photobucket.com/librar

I can't load whatever picture you've just added, so I went back and watched the Schumacher incident again. Schumacher is still on the ground and about 5-6 metres away from Battiston when Battiston plays the ball. He then jumps at Battiston once the ball has already gone past him and collects him with his hip. The ball is about 8-9 metres past Schumacher when he makes contact with Battiston. It was entirely pre-meditated and Schumacher did not contest for the ball because the ball was already past him when he initiated his jump. In the Miguel incident the keeper had already jumped and was less than 1m away from Miguel when Miguel got to the ball first. It's a massively reckless, deserving of several weeks suspension but I just can't agree that his actions were first and foremost about taking out the player when he was so close to getting to the ball ahead of Miguel. Let's say he had got the ball first and then wiped out Miguel with his knee (which he was very close to doing) - there would be people I am sure saying 'well he got the ball first and it was his momentum etc...' - but I think it would still merit a red card and long suspension so I am not diminishing his actions one bit.

It was a reckless challenge and an obvious red card. The results of the challenge is a reminder how dangerous professional sport can be when 2 athletes are 100% committed to he ball. However, I think goalkeepers have been tacitly encouraged to make these sort of challenges by the unwritten law whereby keepers often don't seem to get red carded for challenges that would be an automatic red for an outfield player.
