Stat gurus - what's the lowest ever points total at this stage? 14:20 - Jan 21 with 1161 viewsSamWhiteUK

Are we anywhere near it?

What's the lowest number of wins in a season?

Not doom-mongering! Just curious as I heard my colleague talking about how many points Liverpool have got.

Only checking as far back as 04/05 season we're currently joint 2nd worse with Peterborough 09/10 who ended the season on 34 points.

I reckon 34 could be enough to stay up this season.

oops, just seen this as I've been looking, so will stop now.

Went back as far as 2000/01, based on 28 games. (Pts to 21st is shown to show how close the teams got to the ones who finished just out of the relegation spot; the closest being Leeds in 06/07 who got within 3 points of the team that stayed up. Normally the gap is significantly larger).

Year / Pts after 28 games / Team / Relegated? / Season wins lowest
2000/01 / 25 / QPR / Yes, 23rd place on 40 pts, 9 pts from 21st / 7
2001/02 / 12 / Stockport / Yes, bottom on 26 points, 23 pts from 21st / 6
2002/03 / 20 / Brighton / Yes, 23rd place on 45 pts, 5 pts from from 21st / 9
2003/04 / 18 / Wimbledon / Yes, bottom on 29 pts, 22 pts from from 21st / 8
2004/05 / 19 / Rotherham / Yes, bottom on 29 pts, 21 pts from from 21st / 5
2005/06 / 22 / Crewe / Yes, 22nd place on 42 pts, 12 pts from from 21st / 7
2006/07 / 24 / Leeds / Yes, 22nd place on 46 pts, 3 points from from 21st / 10
2007/08 / 26 / Colchester / Yes, bottom on 38 pts, 15 pts from from 21st / 7
2008/09 / 19 / Charlton / Yes, bottom on 39 pts, 12 pts from from 21st / 8
2009/10 / 18 / Peterborough / Yes, bottom on 34 pts, 15 pts from from 21st / 8
2010/11 / 21 / Preston / Yes, 22ns place on 42 pts, 6 pts from from 21st / 10
2011/12 / 22 / Portsmouth / Yes, 22nd place on 40 pts, 8 pts from from 21st / 8
2012/13 / 25 / Bristol C / Yes, bottom on 41 pts, 14 pts from from 21st / 11
2013/14 / 20 / Yeovil / Yes, bottom on 37 pts, 7 pts from from 21st / 8
2014/15 / 20 / Blackpool / Yes, bottom on 26 pts, 20 pts from from 21st / 4
2015/16 / 20 / Bolton / Yes, botto, on 30 pts, 19 pts from from 21st / 5
2016/17 / 16 / Rotherham / Yes, bottom on 23 pts, 28 pts from from 21st / 5
2017/18 / 24 / Burton / Yes, 23rd place on 37 pts, 6 pts from from 21st / 7
2018/19 / 18 / Ipswich / to be continued…

Bottom line, I think we might struggle to make the playoffs

I very much doubt 34 will be anywhere near enough, but you never know.

I looked at the teams in 21st place just above the relegation zone for this time of the season, and at the end of the season. And also the points of the relegated teams in 22nd place. It doesn't make for happy reading (nb. this only applies from 2000-2018):

- The average is 27.4 pts for the 21st placed team at this point of the season. We're on the low side this year with Rotherham on 25 pts, but that's not anomalously low.
- The average pts for the team relegated in 22nd place is 46.1 pts. Average for the last team surviving (21st place) is 49.2 pts.
- Lowest pts total of a team to be relegated in 22nd place is 40 pts (and this has happened twice); lowest points total for a team surviving is 43 pts (Bolton in 2017/18)
- On the four previous occasions when the team in 21st has been on 25 points or below at this stage of the season, as is the case this year, teams were relegated on 41, 40, 40, 46 pts. The teams just surviving on these occasions in 22nd place secured 43, 49, 48 and 50 pts).

In short, if we need less than 40 points to stay up it will have been an extraordinary season for the last 18 yrs.

Points data:

Year / 21st place (after 28 games) / 22nd place (rel. end of season) / 21st place ('safe' end of season)
