This is why there are rules and oversight 09:29 - Jun 11 with 411 viewsStokieBlue

So do people remember the Chinese doctor who went off-piste and used CRISPR to gene-edit two babies so they couldn’t get HIV? He did this without any permission or oversight and was quickly arrested by the Chinese authorities when the uproar started.

This was the original story:

Well it seems the mutation he made has likely made the children worse off and increased their chances of dying between 41 and 78 by up to 21%. This is because it seems to be related to a greater death rate from diseases such as the flu.

Worst of all it was germline editing so if those babies grow up and have children the mutation will be passed down.

This is why there needs to be cross-national co-operation on things such as this. Something like CRISPR has the potential to do untold good, especially around genetic diseases but it needs to be approached using a well-defined process.

Amazing that an intelligent and talented individual either didn't consider, or dismissed, the possibility of unintended consequences.

Hint to any scientists, mad or otherwise, there are always unintended consequences.
