Amazing what this site has helped achieve in a relatively short amount of time (74 years). It does make you shudder though how much of these discoveries will go to waste if mainstream politicians keep treating science with skepticism at an alarming degree.
Telescopes as scientific instruments do tend to have very long lives as scientific instruments go, but suppose the astronomical community at Manchester University were to decide eventually that the telescope had had its day and should be scrapped and replaced with something better, or different. Could they now do it?
