Trains from Liverpool Street to Ipswich 14:55 - Feb 19 with 1090 viewsRadlett_blue

Why do the Saturday fares vary so much? The day of the Portsmouth game, fares are extortionate AND there is a bus replacement service.
The day of the Southend game, trains are running normally & a return can be had for just over £10.

It’s because advance fares aren’t yet available for the day of the Portsmouth game:

Are you sure it’s £10 return for Southend? The cheapest advance fare on that route is normally £10 each way, unless you have a railcard or other discount.

Sorry, you're right. The cheapest fare I can see for for the Southend game is £13:20 return with a senior railcard.
Why would advance fares be available for 4th April (Southend game) but not for the Portsmouth game in March?

A little trick which might help - split the journey. So buy a ticket/return to Manningtree and then another ticket/return from Manningtree to Ipswich. You can buy these in advance from a London station, or using the Trainline app. You don't have to get of the train, just retain both tickets.

Generally, to get a train from zone 4 (or Stratford in London) to Ipswich this way comes in at around £21/22.

It’s probably to do with the engineering works - the timetable might not be finalised yet.
