My view 14:56 - Feb 25 with 1145 viewsoldburian

April 2020 will be the 70th anniversary of my first visit to Portman Road, leave at 10 with three bus journeys there and back, arrive home just after 9. I think that makes me a reasonable committed supporter though, not necessarily, the most knowledgeable.
In that time I have seen all the ups and downs with five relegation's. Three of those were when we were far and away the worst team in the division. In 1956 we had had our first taste of a higher division but we still had the bulk of the promoted side for our new manager, Sir Alf, to work with. In 1965 Jackie Milburn resigned because he knew he could not manage, but he could spot a decent player and left Bill McGarry with some class in the players he brought to the club, Hegan Davin and Brogan along with Billy Baxter.
Lambert has inherited a side totally devoid of class, they have been sold. To say we have the best squad is ridiculous, the bulk of those players finished a very bad last in the Championship, I cannot see how Norwood the goalkeepers or Garbutt has changed that.
In all my time this is the worst situation we have been in, we will not make the play offs because we are not good enough. I would love to be proven wrong.
Our owner has made continuous mistakes in his appointments, the first being Clegg. McCarthy was his best appointment but did not fund him, if he had the support given to Keane and Jewell we would not be in this mess.
I fear that in what is left of my lifetime we will never get back to the Championship.
As I say this is my view, hopefully I will be proven wrong but I have got it off my chest.

Very good synopsis. I would just add that it is not only the manager and owner who deserve the justified criticism. The players, with one or two exceptions, show no great desire to play their part on the field. As has been pointed out previously there are no leaders in the team. I can remember super Jim being on our players backs for the full 90 minutes and now we have a team that plays for 45 minutes, if we are against rubbish opposition...nil desperandum

I admire you old timers (forgive me ) for seeing the Town even through the Ramsey era and still continuing to go. Well played.

Poll: An interesting day for our politicians, but which one is worse?

Not the Ramsey era but the Scott Duncan era!

I also saw the great John Elsworthy score his one and only hat-trick in 1953,

And I scored a goal past Tom Brown, goalie for Town until 1951, in my first season in the Bury and District League.

Great write up.

Although I do believe we have one of the best squads in the league. Bottom of the championship is so different to league one, not even close in skill level

Poll: Will Paul Lambert be Ipswich Town manager on the final day of this season ?
