Heads up for 'Small Island' on National Theatre Live tonight on 21:57 - Jun 18 by bluelagos | Thanks for the tip. Really enjoyed it. BL |
Glad you liked it, I can recommend the book by Andrea Levy from which it has been adapted. Finished reading it yesterday and there is a lot more in it than got on stage, but that is understandable given that even at almost three hours there is a lot to take in. Over five hundred pages in the book but not heavy going and the lightest of touches as far as the switching between times and character point of views. Told with very gentle humour too. One thing that comes out of the book is the social aspect of the World War Two experience (for both black and white folks in England), if you like Victoria Wood's 'Housewife, 49' (or 'Nella Last's War' on which that was based) I think you will find aspects in common here. The book rounds out Bernard Bligh's character more and, whilst it does not make him any more likeable, perhaps one can sympathise with his lot in life a bit. | |
